Why You Should be doing HIIT Workouts

Despite indulging in chocolates and cocktails this Holiday season, I continue to see progress in my fitness journey. This is why you should be doing HITT workouts. High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is the best and most efficient way to burn more fat, improve endurance and build strength. If you’re on a HIIT training regimen, you can afford to have a little Holiday nog without sliding the scale back up.

What is HIIT?

HIIT is a training idea in which low to moderate intensity intervals are alternated with high intensity intervals. This type of training will have you alternating between periods of maximum effort (think: 20 seconds of jumping jacks) and short recovery. HIIT workouts have been shown to torch tons of calories in a short amount of time — so you don’t need to spend hours in the gym.

HIIT can be applied to running or to exercises such as squatting. HIIT is considered to be much more effective than normal cardio because the intensity is higher and you are able to increase both your aerobic and anaerobic endurance while burning more fat than ever before.

HIIT is definitely the best way to strip off body fat, to the extent that there’s literally no reason to hop on a treadmill and run at a steady pace for 30 or more minutes unless you’re an endurance athlete.

I love keeping the pace of my HIIT cardio workouts with music. During my fast pace, I listen to something like Demi Lovato “Cool for the Summer.” When I alternate to a slower, recovery pace, I listen to something like “Hotline Bling.” Find out more about HIIT workouts and maybe a new routine you can incorporate into your workouts this Holiday.

I will start training for my next marathon in the coming new year, but for now, HIIT is where it’s at.
